R: MWD: The Aftermath (I)

As A mentioned, we had a lot to eat, and if A thinks so, you can bet your bottom dollar it was! Despite my *best* efforts in pre-empting and curbing the over-ordering, it happened….

The food was absolutely brillant. Crispy crackle, soft tender meat, LOADS of sauerkraut (Hmmm) and delicious apple sauce. We ate, and chatted and ate somemore. And when none of us had any room left, this was what remained:

Well, we couldn’t possible leave all these to waste. But where were we going to find the 2 more persons required to clean up the lot? EVERYBODY ELSE WAS AT WORK! So being chinese, I asked to have the food packed to go. We were given plastic bags (see the white plastic bag the pork shank was in?). P, being Canadian, was mortified and embarassed beyond belief. A, well, A is used to this, so she helped me spoon every last onion in.

My mind was racing, what could I make of the left overs! Fried rice and minestrone immediately sprang to mind. Talk about fusion! But when I got home and spied the little eggplant I bought on the weekend, I soon had other ideas.

Intially I thought of using it to make babaganosh. But when I tasted how sweet and smokey the roasted eggplant was, I couldn’t bear to do anymore to it. I then mixed it with some roasted sweet garlic, the leftover potatoes, some yoghurt, lemon juice and olive oil. It became a rather delicious mash!

Next, I whipped up some homemade tomato sauce by sauteeing onion, garlic, olives, anchovies, white wine and a tin of crushed tomatoes. Put the left-over pork and sausages in it, scattered over frozen peas, fetta and mozzerella and….

Dinner was elmar’s transformed. It wasn’t german anymore, but it was GOOD. But wait, there’s more! There’s still the matter of the fried onions and pork bone that I haven’t used. I’m leaning strongly towards a good hearty minestrone. But we’ll see 🙂
